RBSPS Position on Illegal Injectors in Aesthetic Treatments

Patient Safety First

Aesthetic medical treatments such as injectables and fillers should only be performed by fully trained medical doctors, ideally board-certified plastic surgeons or doctors in accredited specialist training. These practitioners have the essential knowledge of anatomy, sterile technique, and complication management.

Procedures performed by unqualified individuals put patients at serious risk of infections, tissue damage, blindness, or permanent disfigurement.

Zero Tolerance for Illegal Practice

The performance of invasive aesthetic procedures by non-medical or non-qualified individuals is illegal under Belgian law (Act of 23 May 2013 on aesthetic medicine and surgery) and poses a major threat to patient safety.

The RBSPS calls for strict enforcement by authorities and urges patients to verify the credentials of their practitioners. Public awareness is crucial to protect people from unsafe and misleading practices.

Training and Recognition

The RBSPS strongly advocates the creation of a Level 3 postgraduate training in aesthetic medicine.

This structured program will provide official recognition and ensure that only qualified doctors are allowed to perform these procedures, leaving no space for unlicensed providers.

Transparency and Ethics

Our members adhere to the highest standards of transparency and ethical practice. Patients are always clearly informed about treatments, costs, and potential risks.

Illegal injectors, by contrast, often operate without oversight, mislead patients, and ignore basic medical standards.

Advocacy Towards Policymakers

The RBSPS continues to raise this issue in dialogue with government authorities and parliamentarians.

Our message is clear: illegal injectors undermine both patient safety and the integrity of the medical profession. Only robust legislation, recognition of proper training, and strict enforcement can resolve this problem.

Conclusion:

The RBSPS strongly rejects cosmetic treatments performed by illegal injectors.

Only properly trained and recognised doctors are authorised to perform these procedures - always with respect for patient safety, ethics and transparency.
